Automotive markets show varied growth across Latin America and India
Automotive markets across Latin America and India showed varied performance in August 2026. In Brazil, vehicle production reached its highest level since October 2019, with 271,200 units produced. While domestic demand is warming, exports have declined, and much of the production growth is attributed to SKD and CKD models rather than full local manufacturing. Electrified vehicles reached a record 24.4% market share in Brazil.
In Uruguay, total vehicle sales saw a slight monthly decline of 1.57%, though they remain up 15.5% compared to the previous year. BYD led the market as the top brand. In Peru, Chery experienced significant growth, with registrations increasing 62.6% from July, outperforming the broader national industry growth. Argentina reported a monthly production increase of 26.3%, though annual figures remain lower than 2025 levels.
In India, the sub-4 meter SUV segment grew by 4.15% month-over-month, totaling over 121,000 units. Tata models, specifically the Punch and Nexon, maintained strong market positions, while the segment saw a 40.88% year-over-year increase.
