Brazil betting ban gains majority public support in polls

Recent polling data indicates significant public support for the prohibition of online betting platforms and casinos in Brazil. According to surveys by PoderData/Aya and Datafolha, a majority of voters favor the ban. Datafolha reports that 78% of respondents support the prohibition, while PoderData/Aya finds approval levels between 52% and 52% depending on the specific survey metrics.

The measure, introduced via a provisional order by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on September 25, targets sports betting and online casinos. While the order is in effect, it requires approval from Congress within 120 days to remain permanent.

The ban has become a central theme in the 2026 presidential election campaign. Polling suggests the move may benefit Lula’s reelection efforts, with 43% of voters believing the prohibition favors his campaign. Conversely, support for the measure varies by political affiliation; for instance, 85% of Lula supporters favor the ban, compared to 70% of those intending to vote for Flávio Bolsonaro. During recent campaign events, Lula has framed the prohibition as a defense against the financial exploitation of the poor.
