Brazil updates electronic voting machines for 2026 elections

Brazil is implementing several technological and interface updates to its electronic voting machines ahead of the 2026 general elections. The changes specifically target increased accessibility for voters with disabilities, the elderly, and those with limited technological familiarity.

Key upgrades to the voting machines include the adoption of the Atkinson Hyperlegible font to improve character distinction and contrast, and the addition of a progress bar on the screen to show which positions have been voted for and which are pending. Additionally, there will be an increased presence of Libras (Brazilian Sign Language) interpreters to assist with various voting options.

The E-Título mobile application remains a primary tool for voters, serving as a digital ID for those with registered biometrics and photos. The app allows users to consult polling locations, check electoral status, and pay election fines via PIX or credit card.

In the state of Mato Grosso, data from the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) indicates there are over 84,000 illiterate voters eligible to vote in 2026, a demographic that relies on candidate numbers for identification.
