Brazil Wagner scandal strains Lula government, triggers PT Senate leadership shift

A recent Atlas/Bloomberg poll of 4,999 Brazilian voters found that the alleged involvement of Senator Jaques Wagner with Banco Master damages the image of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's administration—39.6% say it worsens the government's perception—but only a minority believe it will affect Lula’s chances of re‑election (35.6%). Most respondents (74.3%) think Wagner received improper benefits from the bank.

The Federal Police’s Operation Compliance Zero, in its ninth phase launched on 18 June, targeted Wagner over suspected corruption, money‑laundering and favoritism linked to Banco Master. Wagner’s removal from the Senate government leadership prompted a reshuffle within the Workers’ Party (PT). Teresa Leitão was appointed to lead the government in the Senate, creating a vacancy for the party’s Senate bench. Party insiders expect former Education Minister Camilo Santana to be chosen as the new PT Senate leader, while Santana is also being urged to focus on the upcoming Ceará elections.

The scandal and resulting “dance of chairs” underscore internal PT dynamics ahead of Brazil’s presidential election later this year.
