Brazil Warns Excessive Screen Time Undermines Children’s Play and Development

On 28 May, Brazil marked the World Day of Play with nationwide events that highlighted play as a human right and a cornerstone of child development. Experts warned that the rise of screen‑time is reducing children’s creativity, social interaction and physical health. Occupational therapist Amanda Sposito of the University of São Paulo cited studies linking heavy device use to mental‑physical health problems, and recommended age‑appropriate limits and parental monitoring. Researcher Sarah Menezes Rocha of the Alliance for Childhood stressed that free, unstructured play fosters cognition, emotion regulation and civic participation, calling it essential for building humanity. Community projects such as Gaming Park aim to blend digital entertainment with educational play in areas like Rocinha and Vitória.
