South Brazil faces cold wave and cyclone-driven sea swells

An extratropical cyclone in the South Atlantic and an advancing cold air mass are bringing significant weather changes to Southern Brazil. The systems are expected to cause a sharp drop in temperatures, with minimums potentially reaching 0°C or below in high-altitude areas of Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, and Paraná by Monday (19). There is a high risk of frost in the mountain regions of these states.

The cyclone is also triggering heavy sea swells along the coast from Chuí to Florianópolis, with waves predicted to reach 2.5 to 3.5 meters. Coastal areas may experience strong winds with gusts between 60 km/h and 70 km/h.

While the South focuses on cold and maritime instability, the associated cold front is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to parts of the Southeast and Northeast, including Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo, and Bahia. In the North and Northeast, the potential formation of a South Atlantic Convergence Zone (ZCAS) may lead to persistent rainfall.
