Brazil and Portugal face severe weather, including storms and extreme heat
Severe weather patterns are impacting multiple regions, characterized by a stark contrast between intense storms in the South and Southeast of Brazil and extreme heat and dryness in the Center-West and North.
In southern Brazil, particularly Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná, an extratropical cyclone and a cold front are triggering heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and hail. Inmet has issued orange alerts for Porto Alegre and parts of Espírito Santo, warning of potential flooding, power outages, and wind gusts up to 100 km/h. Some areas may see rainfall accumulations exceeding 100 mm.
Conversely, much of the Center-West and North regions are facing a severe heatwave and critical low humidity, with temperatures expected to reach up to 47°C in Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. Humidity levels in parts of the Center-West, Northeast, and North may drop as low as 12%.
In Portugal, the IPMA has placed 11 districts under a yellow alert due to forecasted heavy rain, thunderstorms, and wind gusts reaching up to 90 km/h.
