Brazil weather alerts issued for election weekend

Brazil is facing widespread weather instability during the 2026 election weekend, with severe storm risks across multiple regions. The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued red alerts for heavy rainfall in southeast Minas Gerais and western Rio de Janeiro for Saturday, and for western and southwestern Paraná on Sunday, where storms could bring winds exceeding 100 km/h and hail.

Orange alerts are in effect for parts of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo. In the South, warnings cover Rio Grande do Sul, western Santa Catarina, and western Paraná. The National Civil Defense has mobilized response teams in major cities, including Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, and Porto Alegre, to manage risks such as flooding, landslides, and power outages.

To ensure stability during the voting and counting process, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has ordered electricity distributors to implement special service plans. Companies like Neoenergia and Enel have reported preventive maintenance and the deployment of strategic generators to protect voting sites and regional electoral courts.
