São Paulo storms cause fatal landslide and widespread flooding

Severe storms and intense rainfall have caused widespread flooding and destruction across São Paulo. The heavy precipitation, driven by a combination of high temperatures and sea breezes, led to significant urban chaos.

In the city center, the Anhangabaú tunnel was heavily flooded, leaving vehicles submerged and requiring rescues by the Fire Department. Other major areas affected include Terminal Bandeira and the Trianon-Masp metro station, where water invaded the stairs. The Liberdade station also experienced flooding in its mezzanine, affecting auxiliary equipment.

Tragically, a landslide in the Brasilândia neighborhood in the North Zone resulted in one death. The storms also triggered multiple landslides and tree falls throughout the capital. In response to the weather conditions, the City of São Paulo suspended the municipal vehicle rotation (rodízio) in the expanded center to manage traffic congestion, which reached over 1,000 kilometers in some areas.

The Municipal Emergency Management Center (CGE) has placed the entire capital and the marginal Tietê and Pinheiros highways under a state of attention. Authorities continue to monitor the risk of further flooding and landslides as the soil remains saturated.
