Brazil announces 15 films competing for 2027 Oscar slot

The Academia Brasileira de Cinema has announced the 15 feature films eligible to compete for the chance to represent Brazil in the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. The selection includes a diverse range of genres and themes, such as historical dramas, documentaries, and family stories.

Notable titles in the running include ‘100 Dias’, directed by Carlos Saldanha, which follows Amyr Klink’s Atlantic crossing; ‘A Conspiração Condor’, a political suspense regarding the Brazilian military dictatorship; and ‘Malês’, directed by Antonio Pitanga, which depicts the 1835 Malê Revolt. Other highlighted works include ‘Nosso Segredo’ by Grace Passô and ‘Vicentina Pede Desculpas’ by Gabriel Martins, the latter of which has international distribution via Netflix.

The selection process will be conducted by a 15-member committee. On September 9, the committee will meet to narrow the list down to six finalists. The official Brazilian representative for the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 14, 2027, will be announced on September 16.
