Brazilian actors discuss character complexity and masculinity

Brazilian actors Mariana Sena and Thiago Lacerda have recently shared reflections on their roles and the evolving nature of character archetypes in television.

Mariana Sena, portraying Elenice in the production ‘Quem Ama Cuida’, has addressed public reactions to her character’s involvement in an abusive relationship. Sena has called for empathy toward Elenice, noting that while the character’s difficulty in breaking a cycle of abuse can cause public frustration, the role is intended to reflect complex emotional realities and the feeling of being ‘trapped’.

In a separate discussion, actor Thiago Lacerda spoke about the changing concept of the ‘galã’ (leading man) archetype. Reflecting on his role in the telenovela ‘Por você’, Lacerda discussed the need to rethink traditional masculinity and the historical influences of patriarchy and colonialism on modern male identities, stating that his work involves shedding outdated cultural labels.
