Brazilian Actress Silvia Buarque Announces Double Mastectomy for New Breast Cancer
Silvia Buarque, a 57‑year‑old Brazilian actress, disclosed that she has been diagnosed with a new case of breast cancer. After routine imaging revealed malignant micro‑calcifications, doctors recommended a double mastectomy followed by reconstructive surgery. Buarque, who previously underwent surgery and radiotherapy for a tumor in her right breast in 2014, said the decision to go public was motivated by a friend’s similar diagnosis and a desire to support other women facing the disease.
She described the emotional challenges of waiting for a diagnosis and the fear of treatment, noting that seeing actress Angelina Jolie’s preventive mastectomy in 2013 gave her encouragement. Despite the surgeries, Buarque continued to work, appearing in the series “Impuros,” the film “Entre os Dias,” and on stage in the play “A Menina Escorrendo dos Olhos da Mãe.”
