Brazilian cooperatives report record surplus distributions to members

The Brazilian cooperative sector has achieved a historic financial milestone, distributing record-breaking surpluses to its members across the country. This distribution of tens of billions of reais reflects the sector's expansion and increasing membership as individuals seek alternatives to traditional financial institutions and corporations.

Unlike conventional companies where profits are directed to shareholders, cooperatives operate on a democratic participation model. The financial surplus, referred to as 'sobras', belongs to the members. The distribution is calculated based on the volume of transactions performed by each member rather than their initial capital contribution.

In addition to financial growth, individual cooperatives are maintaining social initiatives. The retail network Coop has resumed its 'Ciclo de Palestras' program through its sustainability platform, Coop Faz Bem. Since 1998, this program has hosted 18,000 lectures focused on income generation, waste reduction, quality of life, and financial education to support community autonomy.
