Brazilian agriculture faces nematode threats and bee pollination benefits

Recent agricultural studies in Brazil's Center-West region highlight both significant biological threats and potential productivity gains for major crops.

A survey conducted by the bio-input company Vitalforce found that nematodes are widespread in the region, with the species Pratylenchus brachyurus present in 87.5% of samples collected across Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás. The infestation was particularly high in corn and cotton, appearing in 94.4% of corn samples and 94.4% of cotton samples.

In contrast, research by Embrapa in Goiás suggests that native bees can provide a significant boost to soybean yields. The study found that the presence of native pollinators can increase soybean grain weight by an average of 7%. Researchers identified 53 bee species in the region, noting that proximity to native Cerrado vegetation is crucial for maintaining pollinator richness and abundance, which directly benefits agricultural production.
