Brazilian Air Force clarifies airspace details in fatal helicopter crash
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has provided clarifications regarding the helicopter crash in Urubici, Santa Catarina, which killed singer Rick of the duo Rick & Renner and four others. The aircraft, a Bell 430, was flying in uncontrolled airspace during its journey from Porto Belo to Criciúma. Authorities stated that flying in uncontrolled airspace does not inherently indicate an irregularity, as pilots in these areas are not required to maintain constant contact with air traffic control.
The helicopter departed at 10:30 AM on September 21, with a scheduled landing at 11:24 AM. The last signal from the aircraft was recorded around 11:34 AM, suggesting the accident occurred shortly thereafter. Debris was located the following day in a mountainous, forested area.
The five victims have been identified as Rick, businessman Bruno Avelar de Souza, videographer Paulo Ricardo dos Santos Soares, pilot Antonio Roberto Nobrega de Araujo, and co-pilot Leopoldo de Barros Teixeira. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on meteorological conditions, flight trajectory, aircraft systems, and human factors. The cockpit voice recorder has been recovered and sent for analysis.
