Brazilian Air Force deploys KC-390 aircraft to fight Amazonas fires

The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) has deployed two KC-390 Millennium aircraft to combat intensifying forest fires in the state of Amazonas. The operation, which began on Monday (12), utilizes the Modular Airborne Firefighting System (MAFFS) to drop up to 12,000 liters of pressurized water per flight.

One aircraft is dedicated to firefighting missions, while the second serves as a cargo plane to transport essential equipment and supplies. The FAB plans to conduct approximately three water-dropping missions per day. The operation is being coordinated by the Aerospace Operations Command (COMAE) and includes the Zeus Squadron.

The deployment comes as Amazonas faces a severe environmental crisis. According to data from Censipam, the first ten days of October saw 1,380 fire spots, representing a 271% increase compared to the same period in 2025. The surge in wildfires has led 36 municipalities to declare a state of emergency and has significantly degraded air quality in cities like Manaus.
