Brazilian and Portuguese cinemas report strong audience and revenue growth

A recent study by market analyst Tomun, cited by Folha de S. Paulo, shows that Brazilian films accounted for 10.5% of cinema attendance in 2024, up from 3% in 2023. Five domestic titles – Ainda Estou Aqui, Minha Irmã e Eu, O Auto da Compadecida 2, among others – captured 73.8% of the national‑film audience, with comedies drawing 44.9% of viewers. The sector remains dependent on a few blockbusters and still lags behind foreign animation, which held 99.3% of ticket sales.

In Portugal, the Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA) reported that July ticket revenue rose 21.2% year‑on‑year, reaching €8.9 million, while attendance grew 10.2% to 1.235 million spectators. Christopher Nolan’s "A Odisseia" was the month’s top‑grossing film, generating €2.8 million. Overall, cinema revenue for the first seven months of 2025 hit €46.1 million, an 8.5% increase over the same period the previous year.
