Brazilian and Portuguese youth increasingly rely on gig work and secondary income
In Brazil, platform‑based jobs have surged, with 1.7 million people working through digital apps in 2024 – a 25.4% rise since 2022. Most of these workers are young, value the flexibility to set their own hours, and cite inadequate salaries in formal employment. Around 71% operate informally and only about 36% contribute to social security, highlighting concerns about job protection and benefits.
In Portugal, a recent survey shows that 74% of adults aged 18‑35 either already have or are considering a second source of earnings. Forty percent currently combine their main job with extra work, while 34% plan to do so in the future. Respondents report an average monthly income of €1,489, which many deem insufficient to cover housing costs and other expenses, prompting reduced consumption and the pursuit of credit or family support to fund personal projects such as travel or home purchase.
