Brazilian Army cancels Atmos 2000 howitzer contract signing
The Brazilian Army has once again suspended the scheduled signing of a contract for the initial batch of Atmos 2000 155 mm self-propelled howitzers from Israel's Elbit Systems. The ceremony, originally set for October 27, was canceled by the Army Logistics Command without a new date being established.
The total acquisition program involves the purchase of 36 units, valued at approximately $180 million (nearly R$ 1 billion). The project has faced delays for over two years, reportedly due to diplomatic tensions between the Brazilian government and Israel.
The procurement plan included local industrial participation, with Brazilian company Avibras expected to assist in assembling units on Tatra chassis in Jacareí, São Paulo, and IMBEL slated to manufacture the 155 mm ammunition. While Avibras had signed a memorandum of understanding with AEL Sistemas, a subsidiary of Elbit, the company's president noted that the agreement did not guarantee participation in the initial experimental batch of two units, which are expected to be manufactured in Israel first.
