Brazilian athlete Rafaela Maciel wins two medals at FISU Games in Lima

Rafaela Cristine Maciel de Sousa, a 22‑year‑old athlete from Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, represented Brazil at the FISU Games – the Pan‑American University Athletics Championships – held in Lima, Peru from 27 July to 1 August. She earned a silver medal in the shot‑put and a bronze medal in the discus throw, placing her among the competition’s top performers.

Maciel was selected for the Brazilian University Team, one of only two athletes from Minas Gerais; the other was taekwondo competitor Luiz Gustavo. The Games featured university athletes from across the Americas, including the United States, Colombia, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia. Her success was credited to the local Poços de Caldas athletics project, supported by the municipal sports department and Unimed Poços.

The municipality of Poços de Caldas and local officials praised Maciel for her dedication and for bringing the city’s name to the podium at one of the continent’s most prestigious university sporting events.
