Brazilian authorities dismantle mobile phone theft ring

Authorities in Brazil have launched a major operation, dubbed ‘Frankmobile’, to dismantle an organized crime network specializing in the theft, robbery, and illegal resale of mobile phones. Following a two-year investigation by the Gaeco (Specialized Action Group to Combat Organized Crime) of the São Paulo Public Prosecutor's Office, the operation targeted criminal structures in São Paulo and Goiás.

The investigation identified four distinct criminal groups: those responsible for street thefts and robberies, specialists who unlock devices and access personal data, technicians who alter IMEI numbers and bypass technical blocks using international websites, and those who dismantle devices to sell parts.

Law enforcement executed 84 search and seizure warrants and carried out multiple arrests. Seized items include thousands of mobile phones and components, notebooks, tablets, and various electronic devices. The judiciary has authorized the freezing and confiscation of millions in assets, with reports indicating approximately R$ 8 million in blocked bank accounts and over R$ 5 million in other assets and values.
