Brazilian authorities investigate municipal corruption and contract irregularities

Authorities in Brazil are conducting separate investigations into alleged corruption and contract irregularities within municipal governments.

In Piauí, the State Public Ministry has opened a civil inquiry into the Mayor of Jurema, Kaylanne Oliveira (MDB). The investigation focuses on the procurement of manual and mechanized road maintenance services. Allegations suggest that services commenced before the formal conclusion of the contracting process and that there were discrepancies between the contracted mechanized services and the manual labor actually performed. The municipality has been ordered to provide full documentation, including commercial proposals, price justifications, and payment receipts, within 15 days.

In Pernambuco, the Federal Police launched Operation Check-out to investigate suspects accused of destroying evidence and obstructing Operation Check-in. The original operation, launched in June, targets a criminal organization suspected of corruption, embezzlement, and contract fraud involving the Recife City Hall. This includes investigations into outsourcing contracts from 2020, where a company received approximately R$ 25.8 million, a significant portion of which was funded by federal resources.
