Brazilian baby Noah revived after being declared dead
In mid‑July 2026 a newborn known as Noah was taken to a neonatal intensive‑care unit in the São Paulo state hospital Santa Casa de Rio Claro. After suffering two cardiac arrests doctors performed more than 40 minutes of resuscitation and then declared the infant dead.
Approximately five hours later staff from a funeral home, who were preparing a coffin, observed faint signs of life and immediately contacted the hospital. Noah was rushed back to the intensive‑care unit and later transferred to a university clinic for continued treatment.
The hospital affirms that all medical protocols were followed and has launched internal and ethical‑committee reviews to understand the episode. Physicians have cited the extremely rare "Lazarus syndrome"—spontaneous return of circulation after resuscitation has ceased—as a possible explanation. The baby remains intubated, in serious condition but, according to his parents, showing gradual improvement.
