Brazilian banks hold R$ 10 billion in repossessed real estate

Brazil's five largest banks hold approximately R$ 11 billion in assets for sale as of June 2026, with R$ 10 billion consisting of repossessed real estate following unpaid credit operations. According to the Mapa Resale survey, Caixa Econômica Federal holds the largest share, with R$ 6.03 billion in assets and 24,572 units. Other major holders include Bradesco (R$ 2.53 billion), Santander (R$ 1.59 billion), Itaú (R$ 598 million), and Banco do Brasil (R$ 302 million).

In a separate development aimed at modernizing the sector, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, and several cooperative groups including Ailos, Sicoob, Sicredi, and Unicred have entered an agreement to test real estate credit tokenization. The project, which involves the National Operator of the Electronic Real Estate Registry System, intends to use blockchain technology to transform contracts and records into secure digital representations. Testing is scheduled to begin in March 2027 to improve data exchange, traceability, and bureaucratic efficiency in mortgage processes.
