Brazilian Bar Association seeks end to STF fake‑news inquiry and parity in justice council

On Brazil's National Day of Mobilisation for Judiciary Reform, the Rio Grande do Sul section of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB/RS) led by president Leonardo Lamachia presented new proposals to improve the judiciary. The measures include a petition to the Inter‑American Court of Human Rights to inspect and recommend the immediate closure of the Supreme Court’s "inquérito 4.781" – the fake‑news investigation – with Lamachia stating, "Não há como recuperar a credibilidade do Judiciário, em especial do STF, sem que seja encerrado o inquérito 4.781."

The OAB also called for a constitutional change to the composition of the National Justice Council (CNJ), demanding parity between civil‑society representatives and magistrates. Lamachia noted, "Hoje temos apenas quatro vagas da sociedade civil: duas pela OAB e as outras duas encaminhadas pelo Congresso Nacional," and urged that half of the CNJ seats be filled by civil society. Additional proposals target the procedural rules of the ADPF, requiring plenary admissibility reviews and banning monocratic injunctions to strengthen collegiality and legal certainty. These actions follow a prior OAB manifesto outlining eight measures to restore the Supreme Court’s credibility, spurred by the controversial Banco Master case.
