Brazilian bat studies highlight ecological roles and disease risk
A study of residents on Combu Island in Pará's Environmental Protection Area surveyed 120 riverine inhabitants about their interactions with local bat species. While most respondents recognized bats’ importance for seed dispersal, many expressed fear of disease transmission and aggression, indicating a need for tailored environmental education to correct misconceptions.
Separate research in four urban forest fragments around Salvador, Bahia, examined the eco‑epidemiological relationship between bats and arboviruses. Sampling 445 bats revealed a 56.7% prevalence of Zika virus antibodies and a 3.9% prevalence of Chikungunya virus, underscoring the potential for zoonotic spill‑over in densely populated regions and the importance of ongoing surveillance.
