Brazilian bettors lose money in World Cup, Datafolha finds
A Datafolha poll conducted on July 22‑23 with 2,004 respondents in 139 Brazilian municipalities found that 63% of adults who placed bets on the World Cup did not make a profit. Of those, 48% lost money, 15% broke even and only 37% reported winning more than they lost. The survey showed that 6% of Brazilian adults placed sports bets on the tournament, with participation higher among men (9%) than women (3%).
Betting operators were prominent sponsors of the event. Greek‑based Betano, whose parent company Kaizen Gaming was the first platform to sign a FIFA sponsorship in 2022, bought signage at stadiums. Ads from Betano, Bet365, KTO, BetNacional, Esportes da Sorte and BetMGM aired during broadcasts on CazéTV, Globo, SBT and Nsports. The sector reports that most of its revenue comes from electronic games, though some firms claim higher earnings from sports forecasts. The poll also noted a decline in overall interest in football in Brazil, dropping from 72% to 64% over the past year.
