Brazilian broadcasters race for football rights, reshaping TV strategy

Football has become the premier driver of audience and revenue for Brazilian television, eclipsing traditional genres such as novelas and variety shows. Major free‑to‑air networks – Globo, Record and SBT – as well as the digital platform CazéTV are intensifying competition for rights to domestic and international football leagues. The sport’s ability to draw millions of viewers live makes it a powerful lever for advertising, subscriptions and brand positioning, while the soaring cost of broadcast rights raises concerns about market sustainability.

CazéTV currently holds rights to the Spanish, Italian, French leagues, the Premier League and Brazil’s own championship, delivering roughly ten live matches each weekend. SBT is leveraging the football surge by launching a new local news program, “SBT Cidades,” on 3 August, anchored by Rodrigo Bocardi, and is betting heavily on its news slot to capture audiences. The expanding football market is also generating employment opportunities in production and sales, but analysts warn that the escalating rights fees could become prohibitive for smaller players.
