Brazilian candidates propose healthcare and pharmaceutical expansions

In Brazil, political candidates are proposing significant expansions to regional healthcare infrastructure and pharmaceutical capabilities.

Samanda de Lula has committed to securing federal resources for the construction of the Seridó University Hospital in Caicó. The project, which is currently in the executive design phase, aims to provide nearly 200 beds, seven surgical rooms, and specialized services including pediatric care and intensive care for coronary patients through the SUS. The hospital is also expected to double medical school vacancies in the region from 50 to 100.

Meanwhile, gubernatorial candidate João Campos has proposed a R$ 100 million investment to build a new plant at the Governor Miguel Arraes Pharmaceutical Laboratory (Lafepe) in Pernambuco. The goal is to produce the active substance used in weight-loss medications, commonly known as ‘emagreceras canetas’, to provide treatment via the SUS for patients with obesity and diabetes. Campos suggested that once local demand is met, the facility could potentially supply other states.
