Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approves penalties for discriminatory sports events

The Sports Committee of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies approved a bill that imposes progressive sanctions on organizers of sporting events that fail to adopt preventive measures against racism, xenophobia, homophobia, transphobia and violence against women. Penalties range from warnings and fines to blocking public funding and temporarily suspending the right to host or participate in events. Fines collected will be transferred to the sports funds of each governmental level to finance educational campaigns against discrimination. Deputy Laura Carneiro (PSD‑RJ) emphasized that "it is not enough to punish the individual offender; the sporting entities that omit or neglect preventive actions must also be held accountable." The proposal now proceeds to the Constitution and Justice Committee for final review before requiring approval by the full Chamber and the Senate to become law.
