Brazil's Chamber moves to expand Fundef teacher payment base

A bill (PL 6399/25) introduced by Deputy Fernando Rodolfo (PRD‑PE) is under analysis in the Chamber of Deputies. It defines the “valor recebido” for payments of Fundef precatórios to include the principal amount, monetary correction and interest, ensuring that at least 60 % of the total is transferred to basic‑education teachers – active, retired and pensioners – as an extraordinary bonus. The bonus may not be incorporated into permanent salaries, retirements or pensions. The proposal also gives states and municipalities 180 days from the law’s publication to pay the interest and correction that were previously omitted. Fundef, created in the 1990s to fund primary education, was replaced in 2007 by Fundeb, which now covers early childhood through high school.
