Brazilian Chamber of Deputies reviews legislative proposals

The Brazilian Chamber of Deputies is reviewing two distinct legislative proposals. One bill, authored by deputies Lídice da Mata and Jorge Solla, seeks to extend the electoral propaganda period to 60 days before elections. This change would amend the Elections Law to allow political campaigning, including online activities, to begin earlier than the current window, which typically offers less than 50 days. Proponents argue the extension will facilitate more informed decision-making by voters.

Separately, Bill 1474/26 proposes a ban on advertisements within paid streaming service plans. The legislation aims to prevent platforms like Netflix and Prime Video from displaying commercials before, during, or after content, as well as prohibiting banners and promotional pop-ups for subscribers. The author, Deputy Luciano Alves, argues that mandatory advertising on paid plans constitutes charging consumers twice for the same service. If passed, streaming services would have 120 days to comply, while free, ad-supported tiers would remain permitted.
