Brazilian Chamber President Hugo Motta defends Lisbon trip funded by banker Daniel Vorcaro

Hugo Motta, president of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies, told Estadão that Senator Ciro Nogueira invited him to travel to Lisbon in June 2024 as a passenger in the private jet of banker Daniel Vorcaro. The three attended a judicial forum organized by Supreme Court minister Gilmar Mendes. Motta said the trip, hotel stay and related expenses were normal, asserted no crime or benefit was involved, and noted that Vorcaro did not request any favor. He also recalled having previously proposed a bill that would benefit companies linked to the Vorcaro family. The Federal Police have opened an investigation into the expenses, and the case was recently reported by the STF’s rapporteur André Mendonça.

The interview was recorded only in audio, and Motta rejected video recording. Senator Nogueira declined to comment on the statements.
