Brazilian cinema: 15 films eligible for 2027 Oscar competition
The Academia Brasileira de Cinema has announced 15 feature films eligible to compete for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars. Several productions linked to Globo Filmes, Telecine, and GloboNews are among the contenders.
Notable films include “Malês,” directed by Antonio Pitanga, which depicts the 1835 slave revolt in Salvador, and “Nosso Segredo,” directed by Grace Passô, which recently won Best Film at the Gramado Film Festival. Other eligible titles include “A Fabulosa Máquina do Tempo,” “Herança de Narcisa,” and “O Rei da Internet,” a biographical drama about a Brazilian hacker starring João Guilherme.
Additionally, “Vicentina pede desculpas,” directed by Gabriel Martins, is set to premiere on Netflix following its run at the Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals. The selection committee will meet on September 9 to choose a shortlist of six titles, with the final Brazilian representative for the Oscars to be announced on September 16.
