Brazilian cities approve animal‑welfare bills on pet burials and traffic safety

The municipal council of Taboão da Serra (São Paulo) voted on 16 June to approve Bill 010/2025, permitting the burial of dogs and cats in family graves alongside their owners in local cemeteries. Councilor Anderson Nóbrega said pets are “part of the family” and highlighted the law’s respect for the emotional bond between owners and animals. The measure now awaits the mayor’s signature.

In Salvador (Bahia), the city council is reviewing Bill 203/2026, championed by councilwoman Marcelle Moraes, which would create a permanent “Faixa Viva Animal” campaign during the May Yellow road‑safety month. The proposal seeks to lower animal‑vehicle collisions through education, signage and coordination with animal‑protection groups, noting that protecting animals also improves overall traffic safety.

Both initiatives reflect a growing municipal focus on animal welfare in Brazil, extending legal recognition of pets and promoting safer urban environments for all living beings.
