Brazilian cities ban re‑occupation of landslide and flood‑risk zones

The Civil Defense of Juiz de Fora (MG) warned that homes located in areas permanently classified as geologically hazardous must not be re‑occupied. The directive applies to properties built under the Minha Casa Minha Vida – Compra Assistida program for families displaced by the February 2026 disaster. Officials stress that the risk comes from unstable terrain, not the houses themselves, and the zones will remain under continuous monitoring to prevent landslides and rock falls.

In Muçum (RS), the municipal government prohibited the reconstruction of residences in the most flood‑prone sections of the city after a series of historic floods that submerged about 80 % of its urban area in May 2024. Mayor Mateus Trojan said the ban is intended to force urban re‑ordering and protect residents from future inundations, allowing only a single bridge to be rebuilt at its original location.
