Brazilian cities confront safety risks from illegal balloon releases

On Saturday, several large balloons were observed over multiple municipalities in the Vale do Paraíba region, including São José dos Campos, Taubaté, Caçapava and surrounding neighborhoods. One balloon fell in the Bom Retiro district of São José dos Campos, prompting a civil‑defence alert. Residents and officials warned that the practice endangers air traffic, citing the nearby commercial flight corridor. A local logistics coordinator described the incident: “Foi muito rápido. Eles recuperaram o equipamento e saíram rapidamente do local, já em busca de outro balão que estava sobrevoando a região.”

Four individuals were detained on suspicion of retrieving the fallen equipment, but were released due to insufficient evidence. Authorities reminded the public that releasing balloons is an environmental crime under Brazil’s Law 9.605/1998, punishable by up to three years’ detention and fines.

In the state of Rio de Janeiro, a large balloon also descended into the Lagoa de Araruama. The municipal environmental guard and transport department deployed a boat to recover the device, which was later handed over to the local police for forensic analysis. Officials emphasized the same legal framework, noting the risks to wildlife, vegetation and aviation safety.

Both incidents underline growing concerns over illegal balloon releases in Brazil, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns to protect public safety and the environment.
