Brazilian cities crack down on sidewalk obstruction

In São Francisco de Itabapoana, Rio de Janeiro state, the municipal Department of Inspection began a campaign against illegal dumping of construction debris on sidewalks. Within a week, five property owners were warned and two were fined, with officials urging residents to report violations by phone or email.

In the city of Rio de Janeiro, residents of the Cachambi neighborhood reported that cars regularly park on the sidewalks and both sides of the street, especially during the weekly open‑air market. The practice forces pedestrians, including the elderly and people with disabilities, to walk in the roadway. Residents said that despite repeated complaints, no municipal enforcement or towing has occurred.
