Brazilian cities expand municipal waste collection programs

The municipality of Belém announced a July schedule for a programmed collection of construction debris and household waste in its residential complexes. Residents may place up to one cubic metre of items—including furniture, appliances, small construction debris and recyclables—outside their homes on the assigned dates without needing an appointment. The calendar lists specific dates for each neighbourhood, aiming to curb illegal dumping and keep public spaces clean during the school vacation period.

In Cuiabá, the city’s sanitation department reported that its contracted waste‑collection firm achieved 99.3% coverage of household garbage collection, handling an average of 15,552 tonnes per month. The operation involves 52 teams (day and night shifts) and is monitored in real time with a heat‑map system that tracks truck routes and identifies areas with higher accumulation of waste. The service spans dozens of neighbourhoods and rural districts across the capital.

Both initiatives illustrate Brazilian municipalities’ efforts to improve solid‑waste management, increase compliance with disposal regulations, and use technology for operational oversight.
