Brazilian cities hold environmental meetings on coastal protection and climate action
In Salvador, representatives of local environmental collectives will convene on 7 August at the Parish Hall of the Igreja de Santana in Rio Vermelho. The plenary aims to defend the urban coastal heritage and oppose the shading of beaches caused by recent construction projects. Participants include residents, researchers, community leaders and civil‑society organisations from neighborhoods such as Itapuã, Barra, São Tomé de Paripe and others. The meeting comes days before the Bahia State Court hears Direct Action of Unconstitutionality (ADIN) No. 8024995‑86, which could decide the fate of legal provisions that allow developments that shade the shoreline.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Secretariat of Environment in Teresópolis organised its first in‑person, participatory workshop on the Local Climate Action Plan (PLAC) on 13 August. Held at the Maçom Lino Oroña Lema Municipal School, the event gathered public officials and civil‑society representatives to discuss climate‑change impacts on the municipality. The workshop is part of the State’s Resilient Environment Programme, in partnership with UN‑Habitat and ICLEI, and will feed into a diagnostic report that underpins the PLAC, slated for completion in 2027.
