Brazilian cities host festivals and honors for Black women in July

The municipality of Vila Velha organized the "Festival Julho das Pretas" on July 19 at the Parque Histórico da Prainha. Sponsored by the city’s Secretariat for Public Policies for Women and the Prainha Vive collective, the free event featured a market with 50 women entrepreneurs offering natural cosmetics, herbal baths, crafts and Afro‑fashion, and performances by local musicians including DJ Vinny, Samba Crioulo and singer Andréa Nery. The festival aims to boost Afro‑entrepreneurship and celebrate Afro‑Brazilian culture.

In Salvador, the city held the "Mulheres Negras em Movimento" ceremony on July 17, honoring 20 black municipal servants for their contributions in areas such as science, education, culture, entrepreneurship and human rights. Organized by the Secretariats of Culture and Tourism and of Reparations, the event included a photographic exhibition and personal testimonies, underscoring the administration’s commitment to visibility and inclusion of black women in public service.

Both initiatives are part of the broader observance of the International Day of Black Latin‑American and Caribbean Women on July 25, aiming to raise the profile of black women’s role in Brazilian society.
