Brazilian cities launch animal protection education campaigns

The municipal Secretariats of Protection and Animal Welfare in Palmas organized a three‑day series of free educational activities from June 10‑12. Programs included a school project on responsible cat care, a public‑square event promoting Cerrado wildlife conservation, and a museum visit for students to learn about regional fauna. Secretary‑executive Meire Carreira emphasized that “when we bring children close to animals and nature in an educational and responsible way, we are forming more conscious citizens.”

In Salvador, the federal environmental agency Ibama, together with local partners, ran a voluntary wildlife‑hand‑in campaign at Parque da Cidade between May 31 and June 3. The initiative collected 58 illegally kept wild animals, which were transferred to the Center for Wildlife Screening for health assessment, rehabilitation and eventual release. Organizers reiterated four basic guidelines for safe coexistence with wildlife: do not approach, do not interact, do not feed, and do not keep wild animals in captivity.
