Brazilian cities Mogi Moderno and Guarulhos launch Cata‑Tralha waste collection drives

On Saturday 8 August, the municipal waste‑collection program known as Cata‑Tralha (also called Cata‑Tranqueira) began operations in the São Paulo city of Mogi Moderno. Teams will sweep streets between Getúlio Vargas and Francisco Ribeiro Nogueira avenues, collecting discarded furniture, mattresses, appliances and tires. Residents are asked to place items on sidewalks before trucks start at 7 a.m. The effort also aims to reduce breeding sites for the Aedes aegypti mosquito that spreads dengue, Zika and chikungunya.

The same weekend, Guarulhos municipality will run its Cata‑Tralha service in 23 neighborhoods on Saturday and additional districts on Sunday, covering areas such as Gopoúva, Jardim Dourado and Vila Silveira. Residents must leave items at their front doors by 9 a.m. The program does not collect construction debris, household trash or dead animals. Both cities intend to improve environmental hygiene and public‑health conditions by providing proper disposal of in‑service items.
