Brazilian cities Niterói and Patrocínio expand accessibility for neurodivergent and visually impaired

The municipality of Niterói has equipped its public cultural venues with sensory backpacks to support autistic and other neurodivergent visitors. The measure, announced by the city’s tourism department, aims to make cultural spaces more welcoming and to enhance the experience for families and tourists with diverse needs.

In Patrocínio, the municipal Secretariat of Culture and Tourism partnered with the Municipal Public Library Idalides Paulina de Souza to run an educational activity on the Braille system at the ABC Anglo school. Delegates demonstrated reading and writing in Braille, highlighting its importance for the education and autonomy of people with visual impairments and promoting broader inclusion.

Both initiatives reflect a growing focus among Brazilian local governments on improving accessibility in cultural and educational settings, with the potential to attract more inclusive tourism and support equal learning opportunities.
