Brazilian Cities Remove Unsafe Overhead Cables to Boost Public Safety

In Maringá, the consumer protection agency Procon is overseeing a municipal programme to regularise irregular overhead wiring installed by Copel and telecom operators. The schedule, covering 16 city zones, aims to finish by 23 October 2026. Since February 2026, 400 complaints have been logged, with 219 urgent cases resolved and roughly 400 kg of unused wire removed each workday. Five fines have been issued for improper disposal.

In Barra de São Francisco, municipal services officials led a second phase of cable removal on Avenida Jones dos Santos Neves, clearing obsolete internet, telephone and TV cables. The operation, coordinated with service providers and supported by municipal police, began at Elizeu Divino street and ended at Gumercindo Farias. Officials highlighted the work’s role in preventing accidents, improving visual aesthetics and facilitating future maintenance. The city plans to extend the effort to additional neighborhoods.

Both municipalities stress that the coordinated actions with utility companies are essential for urban safety and infrastructure organisation.
