Brazilian cities roll out data‑driven safety programs

The municipality of Maringá unveiled a Municipal Protection System that combines crime statistics, five‑year security data and nearly 30,000 social‑media mentions to map perceived insecurity across neighborhoods. Developed with Stratelli Inteligência Estratégica and guided by the Institute of Advanced Projects for Cities, the program follows a three‑stage process of problem analysis, planning and execution, with a pilot phase expected to be operational by the end of the year.

In Rio de Janeiro, the city government’s Institute Pereira Passos announced an open call for academics, researchers and public managers to contribute articles to a special edition of the journal Estudos Cariocas on "(In)Seguranças e o Urbano". Submissions are accepted until 30 September and will address topics such as territorial control by armed groups, the economics of illegal activities and the intersection of urban planning and security, aiming to inform municipal policy on violence.

Both initiatives reflect a broader municipal focus on using data, research and targeted planning to improve public safety in Brazil.
