Brazilian Cities Struggle with Waste Management Planning, Firm Promotes Containerization
A review by the Tribunal de Contas do Estado do Paraná (TCE‑PR) found that many Brazilian municipalities lack adequate planning and monitoring for solid waste services, with most not even measuring the volume of garbage collected. The report, although focused on Paraná, highlights challenges common across the country as urban populations grow and waste generation rises.
Contemar Ambiental’s commercial director Márcio Welsh proposes containerization and mechanized collection as a solution. He explains, “Organizing the way waste is discarded allows cities to improve service efficiency; we conduct technical studies to assess demand and place equipment appropriately.” The approach aims to optimize collection routes, reduce labor time, enhance worker safety, and protect waste from animals and weather, aligning with the national policies PNRS and PLANARES.
The firm’s initiative is presented as the first step toward modernizing urban cleaning services throughout Brazil.
