Brazilian cities tidy sidewalks, cultural sites over sanitation issues

On July 8, municipal teams in Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana district carried out a nighttime operation coordinated by the Subprefecture of Zona Sul and the local executive management. They removed about one tonne of debris from sidewalks and disposed of 80 kg of food items deemed unfit for consumption, confiscating several street‑vendor stalls and related equipment to improve pedestrian safety and public health.

In the state of Pernambuco, singer‑composer Lia de Itamaracá recorded and posted video showing piles of trash and building debris in front of the Estrela de Lia Cultural Center. She criticised the municipal administration of Itamaracá for neglecting the site. Following the video, the town’s mayor announced the removal of a waste‑collector unit placed near the center and said a new location would be sought, citing the need to keep the area clean without obstructing the cultural venue.
