Várzea Grande education depot fire triggers emergency measures

A large fire broke out on the night of 17 June at Annex I of the Municipal Secretariat of Education, Culture, Sports and Leisure in Várzea Grande, Brazil. The blaze engulfed the depot that stored school uniforms, textbooks and food supplies, destroying three trucks and an estimated 30 000 uniforms. No injuries were reported, and the Municipal Guard and the Military Fire Department contained the flames.

Mayor Flávia Moretti issued a 180‑day administrative calamity decree to enable emergency actions, such as reallocating staff, using temporary facilities, and procuring goods swiftly to maintain essential education services. The Secretariat confirmed that municipal schools remain fully stocked, so school meals and classes will continue without interruption.

The incident is under investigation by municipal authorities, the State Court of Accounts and local legislators, who have called for a thorough inquiry into the cause and the security of stored materials.
