Brazilian Community Choirs Provide Free Workshops and Therapeutic Support

In Candeias, Minas Gerais, the municipal senior choir Coral ASA, organized by the city’s Culture and Tourism Secretariat and directed by Neide Santos, meets weekly at the municipal library. Participants say the choir has helped them overcome depression, reduce anxiety, improve memory and social bonds. Member Ruilene described it as “therapeutic, it’s life,” while others noted its role as a mental‑health refuge.

In Joinville, Santa Catarina, the volunteer group Coral Atmen Chor runs free vocal workshops called “A Voz Cantada,” led by singer‑speech‑therapist Idineide Viana Sakata. The sessions teach voice technique, breathing and vocal health, and are open to anyone over 17. The choir also presents three free concerts in September, featuring Brazilian classical repertoire. The program is sponsored by the municipal cultural development system Simdec.
